Are Prince Phillip and Prince Eric the Same Person?

Prince Phillip is raised by a single father and has a horse as a sidekick / pet(?).

Prince Eric is raised by a male caretaker and has a dog as a sidekick / pet.

Prince Phillip falls in love with a woman’s voice before meeting her.

Prince Eric falls in love with a woman’s voice before meeting her.

Prince Phillip sings the same song the woman with the beautiful voice sings.

Prince Eric plays the same song (on an instrument) the woman with the beautiful voice sings.

Prince Phillip declares he’s going to marry the woman with the pretty voice (Briar Rose who turns out to be Princess Aurora).

Prince Eric declares he’s going to marry the woman with the pretty voice (Ariel as a mermaid, who is a princess of the sea).

The villain, Maleficent, tells Prince Phillip the woman with the beautiful voice is in fact the woman he is arranged to marry, Briar Rose aka Princess Aurora.

The villain, Ursula, shows Prince Eric the woman with the beautiful voice is in fact the person he was spending time with who had no voice (by dropping the necklace holding Ariel’s voice), Ariel as a human aka Princess Ariel the mermaid.

Prince Phillip fights Maleficent as a giant dragon. He wins by throwing a sword into her.

Prince Eric fights Ursula as a giant version of herself. He wins by steering a ship to stab her.

Prince Phillip lives happily ever after with the woman he was getting to know, who has the beautiful voice (who also is his betrothed).

Prince Eric lives happily ever after with the woman he started getting to know who also happened to be the woman with the beautiful voice.

Here’s a table version of everything I just typed for those who want to compare.

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered in 1959 while Disney’s the Little Mermaid premiered in 1989. I only came across these comparisons because I was binge re-watching all the princess movies… just cause. I happened to watch the Little Mermaid then Sleeping Beauty and thought, “hey, both Prince Phillip and Prince Eric fell in love with someone’s voice, they both claimed they would marry whoever the voice belonged to, and in the end they both married the person who the voice belonged to”! How fortunate and how lucky they must be!

Both of them fell in love with the voice of a princess and married a princess. No need to bend or break rules like they were both thinking they may have to do (Phillip supposedly meeting a maiden with a beautiful voice, and Eric meeting some unknown savior with a beautiful voice – then meeting Ariel with no voice and who’s background was unknown). Both princes had to debate about who they were going to marry, the person they were getting to know or another (for Phillip the one he was betrothed to and for Eric the woman with the beautiful voice). And turns out neither of them had to decide because the two separate people they were thinking about were in fact the exact same person!

I also find it interesting that both of them were so enchanted by a woman’s singing voice that they had to find the voice. Eric vowed to marry her before seeing her and getting to know her, Phillip was able to see her and dance with her before deciding he was going to marry her… didn’t even know her name… only where she lived.

Bonus, both ladies are young, beautiful, they sing and dance beautifully, and they’re royal! Not that any of those things matter.

Phillip and Eric make finding love and a life partner seem so easy, in my opinion… aside from battling a giant dragon and giant squid/woman.
